Update Groups Overview

Update Groups (also called Schedule Groups) allow you to organize School ERP Pro clients into groups for automated software update deployment.

What are Update Groups?

Update Groups provide:

  • Batch Updates: Update multiple clients simultaneously
  • Scheduled Deployment: Set specific times for updates (e.g., maintenance windows)
  • Version Control: Target specific software versions per group
  • Automated Execution: System handles deployment automatically

Key Concepts

Group

A collection of clients that receive updates together. Groups can be:

  • Active: Currently scheduling updates
  • Inactive: Paused, no updates scheduled

Schedule

The timing configuration for when updates run:

  • Cron Expression: Recurring schedule (e.g., every Tuesday at 2 AM)
  • One-Time: Single execution at specific date/time
  • Immediate: Execute as soon as possible

Target Version

The software version/channel to deploy:

  • Version channels (e.g., “2025.3”, “2024.1”)
  • Latest release in channel
  • Specific build numbers

Benefits

Consistency: All clients in group stay on same version Efficiency: Configure once, update many clients Control: Schedule during low-usage periods Visibility: Monitor group update status collectively

Common Use Cases

Production Group

  • Members: All production clients
  • Schedule: Weekly, Saturday 2 AM
  • Version: Latest stable release
  • Purpose: Keep all clients current

Pilot Group

  • Members: 3-5 test clients
  • Schedule: Monday 6 PM
  • Version: Latest pre-release
  • Purpose: Test updates before broad deployment

Regional Groups

  • Members: Clients in same timezone
  • Schedule: Aligned with local off-hours
  • Version: Same as production
  • Purpose: Respect regional maintenance windows

Getting Started

  1. Navigate to Product → SEP → Update Groups
  2. Review existing groups
  3. Create new group if needed
  4. Add clients to group
  5. Configure schedule and target version
  6. Monitor deployment status
